Meet Carmel
I am a brown skinned girl born in Illinois, raised in Washington, DC, and groomed in North Carolina.....with an infinite love for fashion, beauty, travel and culture.
After 21 years in the haircare industry, 17 of which I owned and operated Aivilo Beauty Concepts - a full service hair salon, I hung up my shears, sold my home and all of my belongings, to join the U.S. Peace Corps.
14 months into my 27 month service commitment in Senegal, COVID-19 turned all things upside down. My service abruptly came to an end, and I was evacuated from the country and people that I had come to love.
After 3 months back in the U.S., juggling the "lemons" that life had thrown my way, the Sene Chic online boutique was born.
Sene Chic allows me to continue working with the talented artisans in Senegal, meeting new people, all while sharing my love of fashion, beauty, travel and culture. It's a new day and I am RESILIENT!
A Touch of Senegal: African Renaissance Monument
Dedicated April 4, 2010, commemorating Senegal's 50th anniversary of Independence, the African Renaissance Monument stands 52 meters tall, atop one of the twin hills known as Collines des Mamelles, in Dakar, Senegal.
It was designed by Senegalese architect Pierre Goudiaby, as an intended expression of the rebirth of Africa, and to boldly present a commemoration of traditional African culture and heritage, both in Africa and abroad. Huge, and colossal weighing in at some 22,000 tons, it is the largest statue in Africa, inclusive of a museum and observation deck that allows breathtaking views across Dakar. When in Senegal...this is a must see!
